Our Environment

Who We Are and Our Journey to Understand and Improve our Footprint

We are a leading ISP providing service in 51 countries with on-net operations in over 219 metropolitan markets which receive and deliver traffic to network operations located in over 3,100 buildings. We are a Tier 1 ISP and believe we have a leading share of the traffic transmitted over the Internet.

Our business is energy-intensive, both in the operation of our network and the resales of electricity to our customers in our owned data centers. Our ability to control the nature of power that we use in our business is limited. An important component of our operating strategy to date has been to lease rather than buy the vast majority of our real estate assets. As a result, we rely in most cases on the landlord or data center operator to arrange for the delivery of electricity to power our operations as well as our back-up power supplies. Virtually all of this electricity is Scope 2 in nature — that is it is produced remotely and delivered through electric grid infrastructure. Using estimates of the power used by our network operations and associated overhead, we believe we used in 2022 approximately 63.6 million kWh to power our network.

In 2022, we began operating our 1 MW solar power array at our data center and office in Pasadena. The projected 2.0 million kWh of annual electricity production at this facility should reduce our production of GHG emissions by approximately 185 mt CO2e per year when operational. We continue to evaluate other locations and will evaluate any newly acquired locations for their suitability for solar power.

While we recognize that we have limited ability to determine the source of the electricity that powers our main network operations, we are committed to becoming more efficient in our consumption of electricity, whether in our network, our owned data centers or our office locations.

We continue to work to understand our power consumption and our carbon footprint. Our Board of Directors has oversight of our efforts. We continue to develop our environmental strategy guided by third party standards, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the standards for Telecommunications Services outlined by the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB).

Solar Array at our Pasadena Data Center

After our solar array became operational, our solar contractor, Sun Green Systems, created a video to highlight the projects. At the time it was completed, it was the largest solar system in Pasadena.
